I am obsessed with making artworks that dance the line between an image and an object.
I abandoned the rectangular format long ago because it pretends to be a window, and I think that association compels us to overlook an image’s "objecthood." The window taught us to see the world through a rectangle, and to ignore the physical reality of the window frame itself. So, too, we ignore the physical reality of a canvas, a sheet of paper, or the glass screen of a tv, computer or smart phone in favor of the image, its rectangular nature beyond question.
An image on any other shape invites us to have a more holistic aesthetic experience that teases the eye and messes with our expectations. Creating these experiences is a glorious design challenge. Each artwork is a looping string of interconnected little problems that I’m eager to solve with a process-driven studio practice that unites design, craftsmanship, and chance.
